prince william and harry with python and cheetah backing african conservation award

HRH The Duke of Cambridge backs a new annual award scheme that aims to celebrate outstanding achievement in the field of African conservation.
The Duke visited the work of Tusk in Botswana with his brother Prince Harry on their first joint overseas tour. Their Royal Highnesses visited Mokolodi Education Centre to engage with some of the 12,000 Botswana children who attend the Tusk sponsored environmental education facility. The Princes also visited a groundbreaking predator conservation and research camp in the Okavango Delta.
Tusk has been working since 1990 to build a sustainable future for the African continent and its wildlife. It has been Tusk’s long-term ambition to create an awards programme to celebrate outstanding achievement in African conservation.
Tusk is looking for individuals who have undertaken outstanding, inspirational conservation work in Africa within the protection of endangered species or threatened habitat, promotion of environmental education or development of community driven conservation. There will be two Tusk Conservation Awards in 2013.

silver red fox _by_woxys

Silver Heart!!
Silver red fox (vulpes vulpes, liska obecna, stribrna forma), Czech republic. She was saved from a fur-farm, and although her current owners love her and treat her very well, she is still very shy

This red squirrel is clearly ready for its close-up as it sits on a camera lens. Wildlife snappers Giedrius Stakauskas and Dalia Kvedaraite captured the scene in freezing conditions in the Yorkshire Dales. Giedrius, from Lithuania, said: After such harsh weather conditions one of our cameras started to act funny - so we found another use for it. We put couple of peanuts inside the lens hood and soon one squirrel was happy to sit and eat inside it.Picture: Giedrius Stakauskas /Solent News & Photo Agency

This plant seems to have large red lips, just like Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger. With a scientific name of Psychotria Elata, this species also goes by the fitting names of the Hot Lips Plant, Flower of Lips or even Hooker's Lips. The colourful red flowers have evolved to attract pollinators including hummingbirds and butterflies. The plant can be found in the forested areas of tropical America such as Costa Rica and Colombia.Picture: Rex Features

Eli Martinez gets a shark to roll over at Tiger Beach off the Bahamas. He says: I've been going to the same spot for the last 10 years and after a few repeat interactions they know the drill but I must not forget what they're capable of. You can spot which one is which by their different markings. They have various scratches and scars so you see them all the time. Hook is one of my darlings and Alex is always around too. I'm able to get them to roll 180 degrees in the palm of my hand.Picture: GERARDO DEL VILLAR / CATERS NEWS

jaguar cub by stinkersmell

Looking back
She’s now almost six months old, but here’s a reminder of how Maderas looked when she was only five weeks old. The jaguar cub and her brother Tikal were born at the San Diego Zoo on April 26 2012

A female cheetah sits on the roof of a jeep in Maasai Mara, Kenya to use the Land Cruiser as a look-out post. They climb the highest point available, usually a termite mound, to spot their prey, but this clever cheetah was so determined to find food for her cubs that she thought nothing of jumping onto a moving Land Cruiser. Photographer David Lloyd was capturing wildlife in the Masai Mara game reserve in Kenya when he picked up the unexpected hitch-hiker.Picture: David Lloyd / Barcroft Media

Police officers in Norfolk, Virginia, responded to reports that a lion was on the loose. They urgently contacted the local zoo to see if any of their lions had escaped. But it turned out that the animal which terrified residents was actually a labradoodle named Charles, which had been shaved to look like a lion.Picture: SWNS.com

We all know that feeling - a large lunch leaves us sprawled out on the sofa, unable to move. This juvenile red-tailed hawk was rendered immobile after eating too much. Photographer Steve Shinn managed to snap the stricken bird of prey on its back after a meal of a coot near a nature preserve in Long Beach, California. He says: I found this bird in a very unhawklike position looking very distressed. I called some folks who work for South Bay Wildlife Recovery. The stuffed critter was collected and taken in for some rest and recovery. A day later it was sitting on a perch and seemed none the worse for the gluttonous rampage.Picture: Steve Shinn/Rex Features
