The hoatzin is a very crazy looking bird- its mohican is surely unrivalled in the animal kingdom. Their young have specially adapted claws so that if a predator attacks the nest the young can jump out, before climbing the tree to get back in once the danger has passed. The prehistoric weirdness doesn’t stop there, the call of the hoatzin resembles an old man with asthma!
They live around the edges of tropical forest lakes where they eat aquatic vegetation. Hoatzin are usually very shy which makes getting photos of them difficult. This particular one was shot in a lake, near the Crees research station, Peru, where the hoatzin were particularly tolerant.
